Vince Gilligan, the brilliant mind behind Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, is returning to television with an all-new project — and fans have every reason to be excited. This time, though, he’s stepping far outside the criminal underworld.
The upcoming series, produced by Apple TV+, is still shrouded in mystery. No official title has been announced yet, and plot details are under wraps. But one thing is clear: Gilligan is leaving behind his trademark themes of crime and darkness in favor of something more introspective, philosophical, and human.
“There’s no crime, no meth,” Gilligan stated. “The world changes very abruptly in the first episode, and then it’s completely different. And the consequences of that — hopefully — will provide drama for many, many episodes to come.”
Gilligan hinted at a shift in tone that leans more toward emotional and speculative storytelling, even referencing E.T. as a source of inspiration. This signals a major evolution for the creator known for gritty, morally complex narratives.
Rhea Seehorn Returns as a “Flawed Heroine”
Joining Gilligan once again is Rhea Seehorn, widely adored for her role as Kim Wexler in Better Call Saul. In the new series, she plays a deeply layered character that Gilligan describes as:
“A person who tries very hard to be good. She’s a slightly damaged heroine — but a heroine nonetheless. Working with her is such a joy. She’s simply the best: sweet, kind, talented. I can’t say enough good things about her.”
Their creative partnership promises to bring a new kind of magic to the screen — something less about crime and more about the human condition.
A Familiar Setting, A Brand-New Mood
The series will take place once again in modern-day Albuquerque, New Mexico, a familiar backdrop for Gilligan’s fans. But this won’t be the Albuquerque of cartels and lawyers — instead, expect something emotionally rich and atmospherically distinct.
While there’s no confirmed release date yet, the show is expected to debut sometime in 2025.
Apple TV+ has already teased fans with a cryptic post on X (formerly Twitter), featuring a smiley face emoji and the tagline:
“Happiness is contagious”
