Disgraced former BBC Radio 1 presenter and DJ Tim Westwood has been formally charged with four counts of rape, according to a statement released by the Metropolitan Police on October 9.
In addition to the rape charges, Westwood faces nine counts of indecent assault and two charges of sexual assault, with allegations filed by seven women. The alleged offences span more than three decades, said to have occurred between 1983 and 2016.
Background of the Case
The accusations against Westwood first came to light in 2022, following a joint investigation by BBC News and The Guardian that uncovered numerous claims of sexual misconduct during his 19-year career at the BBC.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) confirmed that a “file of evidence” was submitted by the Metropolitan Police last year, leading to the formal charges being announced this week.
“It takes courage to come forward and report allegations of this nature,” said Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy of the Met Police. “The women who have done so have put their trust in us, and we continue to provide them with all available support.”
The police emphasized that their investigation remains open, urging anyone with additional information to contact them confidentially at CIT@met.police.uk.
Legal Proceedings
According to Chief Crown Prosecutor Lionel Idan, prosecutors determined that “there is sufficient evidence to bring the case to trial and that it is in the public interest to pursue criminal proceedings.”
Tim Westwood has been ordered to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, November 11, where formal proceedings will begin.
